The Joy of Not Planning

by Phil Romig Jr.
resources for his column in the Summer 2014 issue of The Backcountry Llama

“The Joy of Not Planning” in the Summer 2014 issue of The Backcountry Llama describes three trips where lack of planning produced some memorable experiences but just as easily could have resulted in disaster. If it had rained harder in Indiana, the river could have washed us away. If one of us had fallen while descending the cliff in the second trip to Lost Lake, it might have been impossible for EMTs to reach us in time. In the backcountry, terrain and weather create enough life-threatening hazards without making it worse by not planning ahead. We owe it to our families and friends to do everything possible to ensure that we return safely from trips into the back country.

To minimize the kind of problems described in the article, this web site provides suggestions for the content of a trip plan and a few possible sources for that content.
